Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain rulings from the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
